Graves

Visiting Deceased Ancestors

If you are looking to retrieve more information about your deceased ancestors and know where they were buried then it is worth taking a visit to see their grave. Although most graves are inscribed with just a message, a grave almost always includes the deceased person’s date and age of death and full name that would back up or assist your current Genealogy findings. Also the grave may be the resting place of 2 people providing 2 parts of information.

Society of Genealogists (SOG) Collection

The Society of Genealogists holds a national collection of monumental inscriptions. In case you are wondering how they have been collected – I did – local Family History societies and other organizations have visited graveyards across Britain and noted down the inscriptions on tombstones and monuments: graves potting. For the curious, it is well worth checking whether an ancestor’s last communication with the world has been kept for posterity.
