Introduction to Genealogy

What is Genealogy?

Genealogy is a study or investigation of heritage and Family History. The study of Family History has become very popular; and when you start you will understand why. Be advised, it is very addictive. The more information you dig up the further you become hooked on the subjects of your past. For most of us being at this website means we are ready to start looking into our Ancestry, however for the sceptics among us who are still asking ‘Why would we use our valuable time to embark on Genealogy research?’ The answer for most of us is simple; and that is to find out who we are. Of course we know our names, where we live and what we do for a living but unless you have studied your Family History already you don’t know the rest, such as ‘Why do we behave the way we do?‘ ‘Why do we have certain talents?’ and ‘Where do we get our distinguishing facial features from?’ Our mannerisms, abilities, looks and even downfalls often stem from our parents of which have been passed on by their parents, and so on. Our Ancestors make up who we are today.

Why conduct a Genealogy Study?

Investigating your Family History can reveal a fascinating story of your family’s past which can be both rewarding and emotional. Genealogy should be started by anyone who wishes to learn more about their family roots whether it be finding out what their Grandfather did in the war or discovering what were your family struggles during the Victorian era. The Genealogy research you carry out will lead you to many discoveries; how and where your Ancestor’s lived, their occupations, family names, and perhaps sinister tales that have been kept secret over the years to prevent shame being brought to the family. It’s therefore worth keeping in mind that whatever interesting finds may potentially be unearthed there could also be unpleasant facts brought to light. Studying your Ancestry can be hard work and could possibly require hours of trawling through papers or website data to find an Ancestor. When but the effort you put in pays dividends when you make your discovery.

Recording Info

It is wise to record your Family History using software on a computer if you have one, or alternatively use a book to detail names, dates, and stories discovered. A Family Tree chart is a good method of illustrating a Genealogy study. If you have parents or other relatives still alive they may well be fascinated by any revelations you could share. A book or chart of your Family History would make an excellent gift.

Resources

The great news is; with the resources available for us today we can carry out a significant part of our study for free! Speak to your parents, grandparents & other relatives about anything they may know about past Ancestors and retrieve any Genealogy facts such as full people’s names and dates or places of birth.
